Bob Iger, Web3-Support Ex-CEO of Disney, Returns: Details

Bob Iger, the former CEO of Disney who is stepping down in 2020, is returning to his former position. After moving on to Disney, Iger took a leading role at Genies, a digital avatar platform powered by Dapper Labs’ Flow blockchain. His return to Disney could be a sign of the entertainment company’s entry into the big space. As with its hiring process, Disney has been expanding its employee base with people with experience in Web3-related projects.

Iger, as part of his new term as CEO of Disney, will work to adjust Disney’s approach as a whole, to suit younger audiences, including its metaverse and NFT programs.

Iger was still at Disney as CEO and chairman of the board when the company filed for a patent related to the metaverse. The installation suggested that Disney wanted to create a ‘virtual world simulator in a real world environment’.

The entertainment giant will also enable Disney theme park guests to use phones to create personalized 3D effects on nearby physical surfaces such as walls or tables.

In his absence, Disney continued to work on his Web3 projects that may see the light of day now that Iger is back.

As of now, Disney has not revealed details of any plans or patents surrounding its virtual world simulator.

At the time of his resignation, Iger reportedly wanted to focus on creating award-winning Disney content.

It’s worth noting, however, that Iger is only returning to Disney for a two-year stint.

Iger will replace Bob Chapek as Disney’s CEO. Chapek was given the position after Iger’s resignation in 2020.

Meanwhile, in July of this year, Polygon was selected for Disney’s accelerator program this year which sees the entertainment company provide guidance from its leadership team and provide a dedicated mentor.

Disney has also released several lines of NFTs in partnership with digital collectibles marketplace VeVe starting in 2021.
