David Harbour’s Gran Turismo Film Has Started Filming

The Gran Turismo movie has started production. In a tweet, Sony Pictures confirmed that filming for the David Harbour-led film is now underway, along with a true-to-life premise, as previously reported. Directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9), the film is based on the inspiring story of real-life Gran Turismo player Jann Mardenborough, who rose through the ranks through a series of gaming tournaments, eventually joining the big teams as a professional driver. Sony is planning a theatrical release for Gran Turismo on August 11, 2023.

While the original Gran Turismo games rely on racing challenges and circuits, Sony plans to add a unique twist to the upcoming movie, by including the story of British racing car driver Jann Mardenborough, who. he started his work by participating in the GT Academy training program. In the film, Harbor plays an unnamed mentor, a retired race car driver, who guides the youth, played by Archie Madekwe (Midsommar), on the path to success. As to whether the latter bears the name “Mardenborough” remains to be seen. Meanwhile, there’s a behind-the-scenes photo, featuring four Nissan GT-Rs lined up in a row, with a clapboard sporting the oddly colored Gran Turismo logo – the target of mockery on social media.

talking to Collider As for the Gran Turismo movie, Harbor teased the level of “visibility” in it. “Neill is so cool and such a great director that it was a real pleasure to work on this film, and this movie is going to be… Talk about your expectations, as he’s leading the way there is a visual in this movie, in this very cool video game world. I can’t wait for you to see this movie. Yes. Sim racing, man, who knew? Those guys are unbelievable,” he said. Gran Turismo debuted in 1997, selling over 85 million units worldwide in its 25-year lifespan, making it the best-selling video game franchise on the PlayStation. The franchise is recognized for its highly detailed visuals and vehicle physics, which simulates a sense of realism. It has no narrative elements, which makes Sony’s approach to the movie feel fresh.

The Gran Turismo movie also stars Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings movie), Darren Barnet (Love Hard), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!), Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell-Horner, Daniel Puig, Josha Stradowski, and Thomas Kretschman (Westworld). Jason Hall (American Sniper) and Zach Baylin (King Richard) serve as co-writers on the show.

Gran Turismo ramps up a push from Sony to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and TV adaptations. Top projects include Amazon’s God of War series and Netflix’s Horizon Zero Dawn – the latter of which will be helmed by Steve Blackman, creator of The Umbrella Academy.

Earlier this month, HBO set a January 16, 2023, release date for The Last of Us series, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. The nine-episode series was co-written by the show’s original writer, Neil Druckmann, and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), and will premiere on HBO, HBO Max, and Disney+ Hotstar, depending on where you live.

The PlayStation Productions unit is also planning to create a film adaptation of the zombie-survivor game Days Gone and Gravity Rush, a sci-fi odyssey based on a character with superpowers defying gravity.

The Gran Turismo movie is scheduled to be released on August 11, 2023, in theaters.
