From Mastodon to Clubhouse, Here are the top 7 Twitter alternatives
After taking Twitter Inc private for $44 billion (approximately Rs. 3,37,465 crore), Elon Musk has started making changes in the social media space that have upset some users, making them look for alternatives. Changes include Musk’s decision to charge for user verification, and his views on content moderation. Musk also sent a series of tweets on Monday, asking “independent voters” to vote Republican in the US midterm elections on Tuesday, entering the national political debate unlike other top executives at major technology companies who have largely avoided commenting on the issues.
Here are some platforms that are different from Twitter:
The Mastodon
Founded in 2016, Mastodon is an open source social networking software, with several features similar to Twitter. It has no ads, 500 character limit, and custom emojis.
Mastodon has more than a million active users every month and has added nearly half a million users since Oct. 27, CEO Eugene Rochko said Monday.
Cohost
Cohost is an ad-free social media platform. Posts made on the platform go into a vertical timeline, like Twitter. The company said it will charge “a few dollars a month” and will soon take tips and sell subscribers.
Social Reality
Founded by former US President Donald Trump, Truth Social is a popular platform for conservatives and recently launched on Apple Inc’s iOS and Google-owned Android.
Truth Social is only available to users in the United States.
Tribal Social
“Social networking at the grassroots level”, available on the Apple App Store and Android.
The platform allows users to target audiences to improve post engagement and says users can find experts on discussion topics.
a place to live
This Nashville-based singer, who has agreed to sell himself to rapper Kanye West, is very popular with American fans.
Founded in 2018, Parler’s hands-off approach to content moderation has made it popular with users who disagree with the policies of Meta Platform Inc’s Facebook and Twitter.
Tumblr
Tumblr is a social media website launched in 2007 that allows users to post long-form blog-style content with media features such as images and GIFs.
It also allows users to chat with each other like Twitter’s direct messaging function.
group house
The platform that hosts live audio chats gained popularity when the pandemic was at its peak. The app allows users to chat with people around the world in what it calls “Rooms” where someone can start an audio chat and discuss topics of interest.
It does not follow an invite-only system for users to access the platform.
