India PC Shipments Down 11.7 Percent in Q3 2021: IDC
HP maintained its lead in the overall PC segment with just under a million shipments in the Indian market in the third quarter of 2022, IDC reported. However, the overall PC segment will see a sharp decline of 11.7 percent in the third quarter of 2022, after eight consecutive quarters of positive growth. Consumer and commercial categories posted an overall decline. Meanwhile, the government sector is the only one that has seen continued positive growth posting annual growth of 91.5 percent in the third quarter of 2022.
Notebooks, which enjoyed dominance in the overall PC segment in India in the past, saw a slowdown in all segments forcing retailers to clear their inventory. I reports from IDC added that the desktop and workstation categories boosted overall integration while posting growth of 23.4 percent and 17.6 percent, respectively, in the third quarter.
The consumer segment that saw an overall decline in the third quarter was able to recover by the end of September with the help of an increase in online sales. The consumer segment was able to ship 2.1 million units in the third quarter of 2022, according to the report.
While the demand for premium notebooks fell by 28.5 percent in the commercial segment, high-end notebooks grew by 9.8 percent in the consumer segment. The growth in the consumer segment of premium notebooks was driven by strong performance from Apple and the excellent gaming notebooks ASUS enjoyed in the quarter, the report said.
HP retained the lead in the overall PC market with a share of 23.9 percent, despite a weak outlook in the third quarter of 2022. However, the Palo Alto, California-based company’s consumer share fell to 22.1 percent and its commercial share fell to 25.9 percent despite continuing to lead both categories.
Lenovo overtook Dell for second place with a solid 18.8 percent consumer share. This is due to the increase in online shopping, the report said. Lenovo also led the small and medium enterprises (SME) segment with a 32 percent share, despite enduring a poor procurement environment across the segment.
Dell’s slide to third place in the overall PC market is largely due to the company losing momentum in a consumer segment that resisted the company’s push to eschew online sales. Meanwhile, Acer continued to occupy fourth place with a share of 10.9 percent while ASUS occupied fifth place with a share of 9.9 percent in the third quarter of 2022.
IDC notes that the reopening of schools and colleges has led to a decrease in demand for distance learning and is the main reason for the weakening of the consumer segment. Meanwhile, “a weak currency leads to rising device costs and price pressure on retailers. As online sales continued, retailers slowed price increases in Q3, but discounts were not as profitable as in previous years. in Q4, which may dampen sentiment,” it added.
