Twitter India Fires Scores Of Employees From All Teams Under Retrenchment
Twitter has laid off most of its more than 200 employees in India as part of a massive global layoff ordered by its new owner Elon Musk who is looking to make his $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,61,600 crore) venture a reality. .
Sources said the layoffs are in the engineering, sales and marketing, and communications groups.
However, it is not yet clear about the severance package to be paid to the retrenched workers in India.
The entire marketing and communications department in India has been fired, sources said.
The world’s richest businessman Musk started his innings on Twitter last week by firing CEO Parag Agrawal along with CFO and other senior executives.
This was followed by the exit of senior management. Now Musk has begun a major job of reducing the company’s workforce around the world.
“The layoffs have started. Some partners have received an email notification in this regard,” a Twitter India employee told PTI on condition of disclosure.
Another source said the layoffs affected “a large section” of the Indian team.
Full details of the job cuts were not available.
Twitter India did not respond to email queries.
The US-based social network, in an internal email to employees earlier, had said, “In an effort to put Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through a difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday.” It said “everyone will get an individual email”.
The company will temporarily close all offices to protect employees and Twitter systems and customer data.
“If you are in the office or going to the office, please go home,” Twitter said.
While Twitter has had many conversations with the government about freedom of speech, the email company has banned employees from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the media or elsewhere.
The company reportedly employs 3,738 people out of 7,500 people worldwide.
