Twitter India Says It Starts Layoffs After Taking Over Elon Musk
Twitter has started laying off workers in India as part of the global job cuts ordered by the social media giant’s new owner Elon Musk to capitalize and make a $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,62,100 crore) acquisition work.
The world’s richest businessman Musk started his innings on Twitter last week by firing CEO Parag Agrawal along with CFO and other senior executives.
This was followed by the exit of senior management. Now Musk has begun a major job of reducing the company’s workforce around the world.
“The layoffs have started. Some partners have received an email notification in this regard,” a Twitter India employee told PTI on condition of disclosure.
Another source said the layoffs affected “a large section” of the Indian team.
Full details of the job cuts were not available.
Twitter India did not respond to email queries.
The US-based social network, in an internal email to employees earlier, had said, “In an effort to put Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through a difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday.” It said “everyone will get an individual email”.
The company will temporarily close all offices to protect employees and Twitter systems and customer data.
“If you are in the office or going to the office, please go home,” Twitter said.
While Twitter has had many conversations with the government about freedom of speech, the email company has banned employees from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the media or elsewhere.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Twitter employees were notified by email about the start of the layoffs. “We know this will impact a few people who have made significant contributions to Twitter, but unfortunately this action is necessary to ensure the success of the company going forward,” said an internal Twitter email, according to the report.
